“2nd Annual Vote Yes to the Dress Event

Tishomingo County Courthouse Museum, Iuka, MS

THE OLD TISHOMINGO COUNTY COURTHOUSE WAS CALLED AT ONE TIME "THE MARRIAGE CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH" IT WAS THE SITE WHERE MORE THAN 55,000 COUPLES WERE MARRIED. THE REASON IT WAS CALLED "THE MARRIAGE CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH" WAS BECAUSE COUPLES FROM TENNESSEE AND ALABAMA WOULD CROSS STATE LINES TO MARRY IN IUKA , SINCE THERE WAS NO THREE-DAY WAITING PERIOD. PREACHERS AND JUSTICES OF THE PEACE WOULD RACE TO THE CARS OUTSIDE TO BE THE FIRST TO MARRY THE WAITING COUPLES. IT IS ALSO THAT IN 1940's, 1950's & 1960's, YOU COULD GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE AT 14, 15, & 16 WITHOUT YOUR PARENTS PERMISSION. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT COUPLES COULD GET MARRIED WITHIN 10 MINUTES.” courthouse wedding dresses Kathy Cappleman Everitt
